I like to read about Spain, so am always looking for such books. I read the 2nd Inspector Fernandez mystery before this one, and liked it pretty well; better, in fact than this one. Why? The Inspector seems whinier here as he pouts about the history of his father and the reasons that his father left the area. As he goes to the town of his father he is not open minded; almost petulant. When he's solving the mystery of the novel, it is good; when he's fretting about the past and his Spanish lineage, it's irritating. I would still read another about Inspector Fernandez, since the 2nd one got rid of some of the Inspector's attitude.
The main protagonist lacked depth and I couldn't connect with him; at the end of the mystery,who cares?
I really enjoyed this book. I had mistakenly read Spanish Lies (his second book for Fernandez character). After reading this one I re-read the Spanish Lies to understand the characters more fully. Harrison is an excellent writer that not only provides you with a good mystery but brings into play the difference between the Spanish culture and the rest of Europe. I am looking forward to reading the next installment for Fernandez as well as the other books of Mr. Harrison. My next read will be Mr Harrison and family moving to Spain.
